A lot of people assume that all stingrays are the same. However, this isn’t actually true. There are a lot of different types of stingrays. One variety are southern stingrays.
Where Are They Found?
These stingrays live in subtropical waters. In most cases, they are found in the western portion of the Atlantic Ocean.
What Do They Eat?
Scientists only have a limited amount of knowledge about the diets of these stingrays. With that said, researchers do know that they consume a variety of foods. When you open up their stomach, you can see small worms, crustaceans, and other types of marine life.
How Do They Avoid Predators?
There are a number of predators in the ocean that would eat Southern Stingrays. Thankfully, rays can avoid predators by burying themselves in the sand. Because of their color, they aren’t very visible when they are in the sand.
As their name implies, stingrays also have venom in their tails. They are able to sting predators for their own safety if they have to.
How Do They Communicate?
Stingrays are able to communicate with each other when needed. Based on what we know, it is believed that this type of ray communicates through pheromone signaling.
How Can I See Them?
Southern rays are fairly friendly, and you can interact with them in the right areas. For example, Stingray City in the Cayman Islands allows you to interact with rays directly. You don’t have anything to be scared of; these rays are comfortable around humans.
Try to learn as much as you can about these amazing creatures. Not all stingrays are dangerous, and not all rays are the same. Southern stingrays are unique in a lot of ways. As you learn more about them, you’ll be able to see what these rays can offer.
